Jane Loo

I am a lecturer at NUS College, the honours college of the National University of Singapore. I am involved in the design and teaching of Thinking with Writing modules. Prior to my current position, I was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Philosophy at the National University of Singapore, where I worked on a Ministry of Education Academic Research Fund (Tier 1) Grant Project, The Metaphysics of Humanity.

My primary research area is in metaphysics. I am also interested in topics related to existential risk, artificial intelligence, and evolutionary theory. In particular, I am interested in the question of what makes us human, and how far we can push the limits of our understanding of being ‘human’.

I received my PhD in philosophy from The University of Sydney in 2021. Prior to that I completed my Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in philosophy at the National University of Singapore.

In my past life (prior to becoming a philosopher), I worked in banking and finance, where I was a part of an in-house consulting team, a member of a due diligence team in a successful M&A deal, and a manager of collateralised debt obligation portfolios. I was also cabin crew with Singapore Airlines, and for awhile, a yoga teacher.

When I’m not falling off a climbing wall somewhere, I’m probably taking a nap, or having multiple coffees with a book or crossword puzzle.

Here is my CV.
